The concerns raised by the school district are that the child was cyber bullying another student. The concerns raised by the child and his parents are that it's an invasion of privacy and that nothing wrong was done. One ethical dilemma this poses is the question of if the school is allowed to observe what the students do on their own time, off school grounds, with their own personal items. Another it poses is if what the student said online can be thought of as cyber bullying, or if it really was just a joke as he said. Does malicious intent need to be there for it to be cyber bullying? I think that one ethical concept or principle that comes into play here is the idea of malicious intent. Whether or not the student acted malicious on purpose or his meaning was misunderstood can make a big difference for something like this. I think that the school is overreacting in this case.
